Casting of the upcoming The Hunger Games adaptation is moving quickly, so here are the latest additions to the cast.
In unofficial news, we’ve heard John C. Reilly’s name attached to play the drunken mentor Haymitch, but rumor has it he is no longer attached. Sadface. And we know Kristen Bell is jonesing to play Johanna Mason, though that is only her preference at present.
Here are the official castings so far:
We reported on the prime role of fiesty Katniss Everdeen that went to Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson will play sweet and sincere Peeta. Gale, Katniss’ best friend from District 12 will be portrayed by Liam Hemsworth (with which we may never see eye to eye on with the producers).
Wig-wearing District 12 ambassador Effie Trinket will be played by Elizabeth Banks. We pictured her older for some reason, but she’ll definitely be able to pull this off.
Katniss and Prim’s life-worn mother will be played by Paula Malcomson, best known for roles in The Event, Deadwood and Sons of Anarchy.
Amandla Stenberg will play the young and wiley Rue from District 11 who lasts much longer in the games than anyone imagines. The 12-year-old actress shot her first film in 2010, the thriller Colombiana. Fellow District 11 tribute Thresh will be played by Dayo Okeniyi.
Marvel, the “career tribute” from rich District 1, will be played by Jack Quaid, son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan. Beautiful fellow District 1 tribute Glimmer will be played by Levin Rambin, known for roles on Grey’s Anatomy, CSI: Miami and All My Children.
District 3’s industrious tributes will be played by Ian Nelson and Kalia Prescott. The tribute boy from District 3 is known for his ability to build land mines.
The unnamed but strong District 4 career tributes will be played by Ethan Jamieson and Tara Macken.
District 5’s tribute boy will be played by Chris Mark and the smart and stealthy Foxface will be played by Jaqueline Emerson.
No word yet on who will play the strong competitors from District 2 including the career tribute Cato, the most fierce of the competitors in the Games. And we have yet to hear who will play most of the city-dwellers including Cinna, Portia, the other stylists and officials from the Capitol. The tributes from Districts 6 through 10 aren’t announced yet as well, but we’ll see them trickle out soon enough.
The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012.

I think gale was cast perfectly and Katniss was the one they missed on. Jennifer Lawrence looks NOTHING like the book describes Katniss as.
I’m still hesitant about Jennifer Lawrence as well, but with some hair color change, she at least has talent as an actress. I would need to see more of Liam Hemsworth to know for sure on that casting though. 😉 Get ready for a big announcement soon though!!
