In news worthy of being a fake-out, unnamed sources are saying that Johnny Depp may be cast in a role in the upcoming 21 Jump Street reboot film. If you’re not an oldie but goodie like myself, Depp starred as Officer Tom Hanson in the 1987-1990 television series alongside Holly Robinson Peete, Peter DeLuise, Dustin Nguyen and Steven Williams. The show followed a group of young undercover officers working in youth crime and was awesome to boot.
So far we know Channing Tatum, Jonah Hill, Brie Larson, Ice Cube, Rob Riggle, Dave Franco, DeRay Davis and Jake Johnson are all among the stars so far. It’s looking to be quite the cast. Hill and Tatum will star as two undercover cops and Cube will play the police chief. (Do we call him “Cube”? Mr. Cube?)
Comingsoon.net reveals that it will be a small but hilarious cameo for Depp. Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are directing based on a script by Michael Bacall based on a treatment by Jonah Hill and Bacall. Neal H. Moritz will produce the film with Stephen J. Cannell, who will receive posthumous credit (he died last September).
Look for 21 Jump Street in theaters on March 16, 2012.
