Johnny Depp is starring as Tonto in a new take on The Lone Ranger. Armie Hammer (The Social Network) has been cast in the titular role, though we hear the film is much more a vehicle for Tonto this time around. In fact, Gore Vebinski has called it “Don Quixote told from Sancho Panza’s point of view.”
Dwight Yoakam is now in talks to play Butch Cavendish, the leader of the Cavendish gang and villain of the film. Barry Pepper will play Captain J. Fuller, the leader of the seventh cavalry. Helena Bonham Carter is also in talks to play a madam of a brothel. They join Tom Wilkinson and Ruth Wilson in the cast. [Variety]
The Lone Ranger will be filmed as soon as Depp finishes filming Dark Shadows and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 21, 2012.
