First poster for ‘The Hunger Games’, plus an animated version

We’ve covered a lot of the casting for the upcoming four-part adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ mega literary hit, The Hunger Games. (Click here to refresh your memory on all our coverage). Jennifer Lawrence is our heroine, Katniss, Josh Hutcherson is sweet Peeta, and Liam Hemsworth (brother of Chris Hemsworth of Thor fame) is Katniss’ best friend, Gale. Donald Sutherland, Lenny Kravitz, Woody Harrelson, Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, and Elizabeth Banks round out the major roles in the first film.

The Hunger Games is a young adult sci-fi story about a future dystopian Earth where children compete in fights to the death for sport and revenge. Katniss’ sister Prim is originally called to compete, but Katniss takes her place alongside Peeta from her district. The story evolves into apparent romance, battles, and ultimately war. It’s pretty obvious that Lionsgate is hoping for a Twilight or Harry Potter-sized debut, which could happen since the fan base of this series is pretty enormous (myself included).

The first poster (and animated poster) has arrived and does some real justice to a couple of key themes. First: fire. Katniss is known as the “girl on fire” due to some interesting costume choices during the games by her stylist Cinna (Kravitz). Secondly, we get our first tagline taken straight from the book, as quoted from Effie Trinket (Banks),  ”May the odds be ever in your favor.”

The Hunger Games hits theaters on March 23, 2012.

Thanks to Yahoo and The Hunger Games’ official Facebook for the still poster.
