As the Harry Potter decade ends, we are certainly not short on wannabe replacements. There’s a seemingly never-ending string of Twilight films to anticipate and of course the ultra popular young adult adaptation of The Hunger Games. But it looks like DreamWorks is banking on a five-novel series by Karen Marie Moning called Fever, which revolves around the world of the Fae with mystery and urban fantasy. [/Film]
I haven’t read these, but they strike me as a little Twilight-esque, so I’m reserving judgement. Moning’s website does nothing to change that theory. Anyone read them yet? Are we in for a new franchise?
Edit due to helpful comments: These are not young adult novels, so that precludes them from having too much to do with the Twilight genre. Not that it’s a bad genre to be in (internet gods know I like me a young adult novel once in awhile), but we’re hearing that it’s more of an adult urban fantasy, which sounds awesome.

These are adult books and have very little to do with vampires. The one vampire character that is only in 2 of the five books, without giving away actual spoilers, may or may NOT be an actual vampire. The concept of “love” kind of made me laugh as there is some, but it comes in the later in the books and it focuses on the erotic over loving romance. The final book, Shadowfever, debuted on the New York Times at number 1. There is a large fanbase for it, but because it is NOT a teen series it doesn’t have the press the teen movie franchises being compared to it (unfairly) have gotten. While it is Urban Fantasy and an epic in its own right, comparing it to Harry Potter and Twilight do not give it justice. The Fever series deserves to be compared to more mature epics like Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones if anything, though it does have horror elements.
And I just woke up, so I am rambling. LOL
Let’s just say I am ready for MacKayla Lane to start kicking some fae arse, for the enigma of Jericho Barrons to grace the screen as viewers share the frustrations the readers had trying to figure out “what” he is, and for my personal favorite character, V’lane, the Fae Prince whos sexuality is as deadly as any weapon..if not more so. Here’s hoping the project gets the greenlight and gets made this time around
Hell yeah, this sounds good. I’ve updated the article with the new infos. Thanks!
Sorry for my typos, lol I don’t know where my brain was this morning. And I love the YA myself, but I think the Fever series is one of my favorite series I have read in a long time. And I don’t think parents would be too pleased if their young teens were to pick up these books based on the content) Definitely check them out if you’re looking for something new to read. All five books are one continuous story rather than one book with four sequels. (the cliffhangers were such a torture between book releases LOL.)
Darkfever
Bloodfever
Faefever
Dreamfever
Shadowfever
You won’t be disappointed. Even grown men are getting hooked on this one.
I love getting into a series when the books are already out. Cliffhangers are fun, but it’s nice to be able to get instant satisfaction.
I don’t know where the Twilight comparison comes from, this is urban fantasy, not young adult. Not only have I read the series, but I love the series and if you look on Amazon, she has almost 400 five star reviews out of over 500 reviews for Shadowfever so I’m not the only one who is loving it.
If you are a reader, I highly recommend that you check out the series. You won’t be disappointed:)
I definitely knew it was popular, so this is awesome news that it’s not young adult. Updated the article to reflect that. Thanks!
First of all, I commend you for editing your article in light of the other comments. It’s refreshing to see, especially since other articles that have been written have simply disabled the comment section and removed posts trying to correct the writer. Thank you for that.
As the other ladies have said, these books are definitely adult, with adult situations and language. They are urban fantasy, with an erotic and sexy edge. Mackayla is a young woman who is forced to mature very quickly. The male characters, whether it’s Barrons or V’lane or Christian or one of the “eight” are MEN …fully mature, intensely sexual and brooding …nothing that a teenager would ever be able to handle.
Hopefully a movie can do the series, the characters, the author and her fans justice
Totally. Here’s hoping it gets made since there is obviously a fan base waiting on it now!
So happy to see your write-up on Dreamworks making the Fever Books into a movie! And especially appreciate the fact that you listened to the comments on the book content! These books are unique and not YA… While I do love the books that you originally compared them too, the Fever Books are nothing like them. This movie willl be for fans that love urban fantasy / sci fi / and mystery. The Fever books grabbed me and didn’t let me go!
Nice! Yeah, hopefully it doesn’t come off so much as a comparison of the book content as a comparison of major movie franchises as an industry. You could say the Bourne series is as much of a franchise, even though they don’t share content similarities (that I know of, ha!)
thanks for the comment! (I started the first book today!)
Hi,
Thanks for the information! So fever is going to be a movie after all? Last I heard it was not so this is AWESOME news to me! Although I was introduced to the urban fantasy genre from reading twilight, these books are way BETTER LOL. I’ve been reading urban fantasy since 2008 and have read many many books. I can say that the fever series is the BEST urban fantasy that I’ve read so far. There have been a few series that have come close but never been equal to or beat the fever series. Moning set the bar up so high that now I have a hard time with books because they’re not up to par with my expectations.
Anyway, go read the books and judge for yourself! You’re lucky to have all five books. It was torture to have to wait for the new released after the horrible cliff hangers I really hope that the movie will come out soon! When is it supposed to be anyway?
No release date is available yet, but I wouldn’t wager anything before 2013. But as soon as I know, you’ll know!
