I loved Baz Luhrmann’s Romeo + Juliet from 1996. I have no idea how they will differentiate from that retelling, but we hear someone is going to try.
Carlo Carlei (Flight of the Innocent) will direct and Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) is penning the script. Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) is slated to star as the age-appropriate Juliet (she’s 14), which is promising at least. And word is they’ve found their Romeo in Douglas Booth (Eustace in Pillars of the Earth). At 19 years old, he is only mostly too old for her. They could have cast someone in their mid-20s and nobody would have been surprised. Holly Hunter, Ed Westwick, and Kodi Smit-McPhee co-star.
While it’s great that casting is being finalized, I’m hoping they give us some indication of the style of the movie. They have big shoes to fill and unless they really branch out, a lot of fans may not be willing to be open-minded.
Romeo and Juliet is slated for a 2012 release. Thoughts? [Variety]
