Casting updates: Oz, The Great and Powerful, The Lone Ranger, Akira

The latest news on The Lone Ranger, supposedly a vehicle for Tonto far more than the Ranger himself, is that Armie Hammer (The Social Network) will take the titular tole. Hammer joins Johnny Depp as Tonto. Gore Vebinski stated that he wanted to make something like “Don Quixote told from Sancho Panza’s point of view.” Hammer recently signed on to star in The Brothers Grimm: Snow White. The Lone Ranger is tentatively scheduled for as early as Fall 2012 and will be filmed as soon as Depp finishes filming Dark Shadows. [Source]

Director Sam Raimi has cast his Glinda, the good sister, in Oz, The Great and Powerful. Oscar nominee Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine) will star as sister to Evanora (Rachel Weisz) and Theadora (Mila Kunis). James Franco will play the traveling salesman who joins Williams in her battle for control of Oz.

Williams’ Glinda eventually becomes The Good Witch of the North while Kunis’ Theadora becomes the Wicked Witch of the West.(Source)

We recently reported that Keanu Reeves was being courted to bring some high-profile love to Warner Bros. live-action remake of Akira, six-volume graphic anime novel from Katsu Otomo. But it looks like Reeves will not be among those joining the cast, adding to a growing list including Brad Pitt, James Franco and Ryan Gosling, all of whom have passed already. Additionally, a pre-visualization department working on the film was shut down. We don’t know if this means the end of the remake, but it can’t be good. [Source]
