We recently reported on some 3D to 2D news, but it seems there is more risqué news hitting the net. Prior to recent events, James Cameron’s Avatar held the single day box office record in Hong Kong, grossing HK$2.63 million (Hong Kong dollars) on its opening day. But it seems that nothing can stop the phrase “sex sells”. A soft core porn film called 3D Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstacy overtook the blockbuster film by making HK$2.78 million on its opening day. The film is a remake of a 1991 film of the same name. By the end of the weekend, it had earned HK$17 million ($2.2 million).
Sex and Zen received a Restricted rating, meaning only people 18 and over could get in but apparently many of the viewers had traveled from mainland China to see it in its full form before being censored. Being “soft core”, it never shows actual penetration, only implied encounters. It is one of the first pornographic films to utilize the 3D technology. It is also billed as an erotic comedy.
Sex and Zen has also been released in about a dozen theaters in Chinese communities in Australian cities and will also be released in South Korea, France, Italy, Singapore and India. The film is directed by Christopher Sun Lap Key. Check out the trailer below (SFW).
